Matalapaine (The Lightning
Rod)
poster and movie graphics.
2025
Matalapaine is a short film by director and writer Helmi Donner. It premiered at Festival de Cannes as a part of the La Cinef competition.
The film is set at the protagonist grandmothers house, so the central inspiration for the graphics were the finnish public radio televition channeles YLE1 and YLE2, and their retro programming, a typical background noise to any finnish mummola.

The Girls and PikkuBambi
storybook T-shirt
Samu Pitkänen, Siiri Rajalin
2026
In the party T-shirt story The Girls and PikkuBambi, graphic design is combined with traditional storytelling as well as the creators’ shared passion for Helsinki’s dance culture and club scene. The story on the T-shirt is a remix-style combination—borrowed from record playing and mixing—of the old folktale Ivan and the Gray Wolf, the designers’ own experiences, and the experiences of a fictional party girl duo in the northern night. The work examines how the introverted and grey Helsinki secretly transforms at night into a wild city full of life. It celebrates the contrast of this underbelly and also functions as a tribute to friendship, partying, and throwing oneself into the moment, at a time when many do not seem to dare to “dance like nobody’s watching.”

Graphic Monkeyishness
experimental typography zine
2025
Graphic Monkeyishness was the result of a creative writing/experimental typography course Design as Writing at Aalto University by Arja Karhumaa. The zine is titled after a jibe by Beatrice Warde in her book of esseys The Crystal Goblet. In this humorous pairing of words, used as a warning against the dangers of wild and experimental typography, I finally found the language to describe my own practice.
